This is my 9/11 Remembrance Day Speech on the five year anniversary of 9/11. These words are as true in 2024 as they were on the 5th anniversary.
- Monday, September 11, 2006 - Mountain View Fire Station - Mayor Andrew J. Moore -
Thank You Pastor McClure.
And thank you all for coming tonight.
5 years have passed since terrorists successfully attacked the United States at the Twin
Towers of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a Pennsylvania field leaving
destruction and personal loss in the wake.
Most of you, if not all, remember exactly what you were doing when you learned the fate
of America that day. Images and heartache were permanently burned into our memories.
The events of September 11, 2001 changed all of our lives forever.
America will, and must always remember the thousands of innocent lives taken by the
enemies of freedom that morning.
Our history is important to understand so our nation, and our leaders learn from it, adjust
because of it, and plan a future to ensure we never have to relive it.
In the face of these unspeakable attacks, we saw that the wonderful strength of America is
embedded deep in the hearts and souls of Americans from all walks of life.
We witnessed firefighters, police officers, and ordinary Americans demonstrate extraordinary
courage, risking their lives to save innocent victims.
We never know when we will need our firefighters and police officers. When we do call for
their help, they are the ones who run to the face of danger, allowing us to run toward safety.
Thank you Chief Hall and Chief Devlin for leading and allowing us to feel safer and more
secure knowing your teams are here for us.
On 9/11 I was away from my family and spent 5 days trying to get home. Home is where most
wanted to be. Many Americans and their would be rescuers were not so fortunate to find
home again.
America united in compassion and came together to provide relief and bring hope to others.
It is this foundation of our wonderful country that makes what we all do worth it.
The events of September 11, 2001, will always be a defining moment in our history.
I often think about the victims and their families and cry in my heart knowing for them I can
never forget what evil in the world is capable of doing. I hope all Americans never forget, but
instead remember the brave souls who gave it all on September 11, 2001.
Thank You.
