I want to explore an important topic in Erie: oil and gas (O&G) operations in and around Erie. Residents have had many negative experiences with O&G over the years, so it is essential to understand the current landscape, regulations, and what residents can count on going forward:
To understand the current landscape, it is essential to know Colorado Senate Bill 181 passed in 2019 and fundamentally changed every step in the O&G operations process. At its core, SB181 provided Erie, and all municipalities in Colorado, with expanded protections and tools to safeguard residents, including quadrupling the minimum setback requirements from 500 ft to 2000 ft. It is rare to see one piece of legislation have such an immediate and profound impact, but that is precisely what SB181 did.
I wholeheartedly support the efforts enacted to modernize O&G regulations in Colorado, which have increased setbacks for residential areas and schools. Our kids and families deserve to feel safe and secure, and O&G operations don’t belong near them.
Erie residents can feel confident that I will have your back in ensuring O&G operations are not happening in your backyard. While we cannot govern operations near or outside Erie, I will speak up on behalf of residents so we can have a positive influence.
I am proud to share that I commute in an electric car and will promote policies that support clean energy usage. As one practical example, I believe new home builders should offer options for EV chargers and solar panels to help promote clean energy usage.
Thanks for reading, and I’m looking forward to continuing the conversation!
Best,
Andrew Moore
