Who is Andrew? (all in one place)

Many of you may know me from my three terms as Mayor of Erie (‘04-’10). And many don’t know much, if anything, about me. Talking about myself is scratchy, but I know it is essential that you get to know me as I ask for your vote to become Erie’s next mayor. Here we go…

Background

My Colorado roots began three generations ago when my grandparents immigrated from Italy and settled in Brush, Colorado, where my mom was born. I was raised in a working-class family by my father, an underage WWII Navy veteran, and my pragmatic, loving mother, who worked swing shift to ensure there was enough for our family to thrive.

I am married to Janice, a physical therapist at Boulder Valley School District (BVSD). She was also an Erie Trustee from 2012-2016. Our children, Matthew and Megan, were raised in Erie, live nearby, and work in the technology sector.

Education

I am a first-generation college graduate and a lifelong learner. I earned my Executive MBA from CU in 2020, and I hold degrees in computer science and sociology. My education has significantly helped me understand our society's social and technical needs.

Career

I worked in the private sector for over twenty years before moving to the public sector. I am currently the Chief Information Officer (CIO) at the Colorado School of Mines, where I am responsible for all technology. Before joining Mines, I was the CIO at the Boulder Valley School District for 12 years and held senior leadership roles at Sun Microsystems.

Public Leadership

I was the longest-serving mayor in Erie’s history after completing three terms from 2004 to 2010. During that time, I brought my business leadership background, positive attitude, and common-sense approach to community-building to Erie. My goal was to always ensure our town was fiscally responsible while bringing Erie together through community programs provided by the Parks and Recreation Department, the library, the Chamber, and many other private organizations. Key accomplishments include:

  • Establishing the rainy day fund

  • Building the Erie Community Center

  • Partnering with the library district to build our library

  • Establishing the open space and trails fund

  • Passing the first ethics ordinance

  • Implementing the first unified development code

  • Ensuring deep community input while developing the comprehensive plan update

  • Signing the IGA with Broomfield, which allowed King Soopers to come to Erie on Highway 7

  • Leading the effort for Erie to receive its first bond rating through S&P and Moody which lowered bond rates

Volunteer

As a lifelong volunteer, I was a Resource Central director and board chair (2015–2019). Additionally, I have led multiple HOAs as president. During my time in K12, I was the Colorado Association of Leaders in Educational Technology director and president. Janice and I also raise Guide Dog for the Blind puppies, who go on to become service animals for the visually impaired. My father lost his vision to macular degeneration, which makes this volunteer role so important to me.

For Fun and Health!

You’ll often find me spending time with my family or working on a DIY project with Janice—we’re currently remodeling our kitchen! If you ride a Peloton, join me for a ride @InnovateMoore. I also love fishing, especially with my daughter, from the 13-foot dinghy that my father and I used to fish from. While I’ve given up road biking, I’ve embraced the beauty of mountain biking, a passion Janice and I both share. Over the years, I’ve played various sports—if it involves a ball, I’ve probably tried it! I also founded and led the Erie RocketDogs co-ed softball team until 2017. Staying active is a big part of my life!

As I did during my first terms as Mayor, I vow to be fully transparent with you when decisions are being made—especially the difficult ones—so you understand both the reasoning behind them and the path forward.
